Increased Mobility
Transit provides a transportation choice, both to those who have no choice and for those who prefer not to drive an automobile. Most importantly it provides broader mobility throughout the entire transit service area. This gives employers in one section of Milwaukee County the ability to recruit and hire workers from anywhere in Milwaukee County. Also, MCTS and Transit Plus provide thousands of rides every day for people with disabilities, affording them greater independence.
Increased Capacity
To move people efficiently, transit and streets and highways must work together as a complete transportation system. If transit were not available, nearly all bus riders might turn to driving and that would add well over 145,000 daily auto trips to our streets and highways. To put it another way the equivalent of one full bus is a single line of cars nearly six blocks long moving at 25 MPH.
Increased Economic Activity
Every day MCTS delivers approximately 10,000 shoppers to area retailers, which is equivalent to the number of people that shop at an average shopping mall. The economic activity does not stop there. MCTS as a business employs more than 1,000 people with a payroll that gets spent here on goods and services and generates taxes at all levels. Also as a business, MCTS purchases goods, supplies and services that are needed for its everyday operation and a significant portion of that is spent locally.
