April 20: MCTS Update on Coronavirus or COVID-19

Updated April 20, 2020:

The Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) recommends that all passengers wear a face mask or cloth that covers your nose and mouth, while on board our buses.

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says wearing masks or other types of face coverings while in public helps slow the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19).

There are several types of masks and face coverings available:

  • Medical masks: These are usually meant to be worn for one day or less, then discarded. However, note that the CDC says the general public should avoid using surgical masks or N-95 respirators because they are critical supplies needed by healthcare workers and other first responders.
  • Cloth face coverings. These can be sewn using fabric or assembled using household items like bandanas or t-shirts. All cloth face coverings must be washed routinely, depending on how often you wear them. Click here to view the CDC’s website, which includes instructions on how to make your own.
  • Scarves. Health officials say scarves can provide some degree of protection, however, masks and cloth face coverings are still the preferred options.

The CDC says masks should:

  • Fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face
  • Be secured with ties or ear loops
  • Include multiple layers of fabric
  • Allow for breathing without restriction
  • Be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to shape

Please respect yourself, other passengers and our bus drivers by remembering the following:

  • Buses are for essential trips only. This means you should only ride the bus if you are heading to an essential job or critical location like the hospital, grocery store or pharmacy.
  • No leisure riding, loitering, or sleeping is permitted.
  • A maximum of 10 passengers are allowed on a bus at any given time.
  • Do not ride the bus if you tested positive for COVID-19, are currently awaiting test results, or think you may have been exposed to someone who has the virus.
  • We are still not collecting fare. Continue to enter and exit the bus through the back door only (unless you need help with a mobility device or other ADA accommodation). Be patient and leave plenty of space between yourself and others while entering and exiting the bus.
