March 13: MCTS Update on Coronavirus or COVID-19

Updated March 13, 2020:

Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our customers and employees. That’s why the Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS) is constantly monitoring updates from local, state, and federal health and Emergency Management officials.

At this time, they have not recommended that we limit any transit service. Like us, experts understand that public transportation is vital to the community and many people depend on our services to get where they need to go. While many events are being canceled and some businesses, schools and other locations are temporarily closing, there are still plenty of people who need to get to jobs, social services, and other important destinations. We take this responsibility very seriously.

MCTS has proactively implemented an extra daily disinfection process on all buses using EPA-approved and CDC-recommended cleaning products. That’s in addition to the standard cleaning our vehicles receive on a regular basis. Just remember that surfaces are only clean until someone touches them or coughs/sneezes nearby.

Preventing the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a team effort, so please follow the recommendations of health officials including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

  • Stay home when you are sick
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. If soap and water are not available, use hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth
  • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

Health officials are also recommending "social distancing" — meaning you should leave plenty of distance between yourself and others to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

MCTS is also working internally to help keep our workforce safe and healthy. We are prepared to take further action, as needed, to protect our employees and the public.

Future updates from MCTS will be posted at RideMCTS.com/coronavirus. You're also encouraged to stay updated by visiting Milwaukee County's website or the CDC's website at Coronavirus.gov.
