New Freedom

Through complimentary travel training and useful tools, the New Freedom Program helps seniors and people with disabilities ride the bus safely and independently.

Community Outreach

Bus Orientation Program

Milwaukee County Transit (MCTS) staff will come out to your location (e.g., school, agency, senior citizen group, etc.) to present the Freedom on Wheels program, at no cost to your organization.

Freedom on Wheels is a two-part presentation for groups of individuals that would like to learn to ride the bus:

  • Part One is a classroom type setting, focusing on fare options, proper bus etiquette rules, safety concerns, route information and new technology.
  • Part Two consists of participants taking a tour of an MCTS bus, followed by a short bus ride to enhance the hands-on-feel of riding the bus and practicing what was discussed in the classroom.
Travel Training

One-on-One Travel Training

Travel Training is your ticket to transit freedom! The New Freedom team provides FREE travel training to anyone interested in learning how to ride the bus. This service is helpful whether you have little or no experience using our system. Our travel trainers will help you to become more independent and comfortable riding the bus.

Participants will schedule a one-on-one meeting with a Travel Trainer to receive a general introduction and to develop a plan to meet their bus traveling needs.

Individualized instruction continues on a regular basis until participants feel confident in their ability and can demonstrate independence using public transit.

If you are interested in learning more about the Travel Training program, or to set up a meeting, please call one of our Trainers at 414-343-1711.

Trip Assistance

Mobility Management

Having trouble getting where you want to go? Let us help. We will explain your transportation options and connect you with our community partners. Mobility Management involves creating partnerships with transportation providers in a community or region to enhance travel options, and then developing means to effectively communicate those options to the public.

Removing Barriers

Making Transit More Accessible

The Barrier Removal program identifies physical barriers in the public right-of-way that make it difficult to access the bus system. This program is designed to enhance accessibility and create a consumer-friendly transit system.

New Freedom Pass

Ride the Bus for $1 Per Day!

Thanks to a Federally Funded program, and in cooperation with Milwaukee County, eligible Transit Plus riders who are interested and able to ride MCTS buses may do so for $1 per day, using their Transit Plus Card. Always tell the bus driver you are using your New Freedom Pass BEFORE touching the card on the farebox. A PCA rides at no charge. Any Transit Plus rider who can safely use the bus system instead of taxi or van service, is encouraged to do so. This program may change depending continued availability of funding.

Please make sure you follow these simple instructions when using your New Freedom Pass on any MCTS bus.

Using a New Freedom Pass on the Bus with Cash

  1. When you board the first bus each day, show the driver your New Freedom Pass card and tell them you would like to purchase a New Freedom Pass with cash
  2. Do not touch your card to the farebox until the driver says it’s okay
  3. Once the driver says it’s okay, touch your New Freedom Card to the farebox
  4. Put your money in the farebox
  5. After paying, touch your New Freedom card to the farebox and you’re ready for unlimited riding for that day
  6. On every additional bus you ride for the day, simply touch your card on the farebox when you board

Using a New Freedom Pass on the Bus with Stored Cash Value

  1. When you board the first bus each day, show the driver your New Freedom Pass card and tell them you would like to purchase a New Freedom Day Pass with Stored Cash Value
  2. Do not touch your card to the farebox until the driver says it’s okay
  3. Touch your New Freedom Pass card to the farebox. Farebox deducts $1 from your stored value balance. Now you’re ready for unlimited riding that day
  4. On every additional bus you ride for the day, simply touch your card on the farebox when you board
