MILWAUKEE – Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele and the Milwaukee County Transit System are excited to announce the addition of 28 new buses to the MCTS fleet.
The clean-diesel GILLIG buses recently rolled off the assembly line in California and completed a five-day, 2,200-mile road trip to Wisconsin. The new buses will enter service starting early this summer, replacing older vehicles that are reaching the end of their efficiency.
Notable features of the new vehicles include improved fuel economy, lower emissions, optimized driver visibility, anti-slip flooring, easier-to-read digital display signs, and a stainless-steel understructure designed to reduce salt corrosion. The buses also have heated side mirrors which will help melt snow and ice during the extreme winter months.
This is the first time in more than 15 years that MCTS has purchased GILLIG buses.
“Rolling out new, state-of-the-art buses builds on the investments we are making to provide our residents with the world-class public transportation system that they deserve,” said Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele. “This investment helps to ensure that the 100,000 riders who rely on MCTS every day can get to work, school and other destinations across our great county.”
With a fleet of nearly 400 buses, MCTS is proud to provide more than 30 million rides a year.
