MCTS Bus Driver Shamika Anderson was driving the PurpleLine on July 1, 2021 when she met a teenager who was on his way to work at a sandwich shop on Milwaukee’s south side.
Fareon King, who just turned 18, tried paying his fare but realized he didn’t have the full amount. Shamika, who could see that Fareon was just trying to get to his job, let him ride.
Later in the day, she called the restaurant and spoke to Fareon’s supervisor. Shamika explained that she’d like to stop by and surprise Fareon with a free, two-week bus pass.
She said it was a small gesture to encourage the teen to continue working hard, to stay out of trouble, and to always do the right thing.
"I didn't even know if he was in need," Shamika said. "I did it because that's what I wanted to do and I wanted to send a message."
"To have somebody that I don't know take time out of their day to come all the way over here and help me out, that's kind of a great feeling," Fareon said in an interview.
Fareon’s mom said her son, who is a senior in high school, is a wonderful kid who works hard and is trying to save up for a car and his own apartment.
